What is a Doctor of Chiroppractic?

What is a Doctor of Chiroppractic?

What is a Doctor of Chiroppractic?

Chiropractors offer a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care. Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.) must undergo completion of an undergraduate degree, as well as an addition 3+ years of post-graduate schooling to obtain their degree. They are extremely well-trained in the area of neuro-musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment of conditions.

What is Spinal Manipulation?

What is a Doctor of Chiroppractic?

What is a Doctor of Chiroppractic?

A spinal adjustment occurs when a doctor applies a small amount of force in a specific manner to a joint, restoring motion which was restricted, and reducing pressure on the accompanying nerve roots. These adjustments are sometimes accompanied by a “pop” which is simply nitrogen gas being released from the synovial capsule within the joint itself. These adjustments often result in immediate pain relief.

Is Spinal Manipulation Safe?

Is Spinal Manipulation Safe?

Absolutely! Chiropractic adjustments are safe for all ages, from infants to the geriatric population. The force that is input during a spinal adjustment is no more than a muscle twitch.

What to Expect During Your First Visit

Your Initial Visit

Your first visit can be confusing and intimidating. Our goal is to focus our methods so that it is as simply and easy for our patients as possible.

Before We Begin...

  • Paperwork - This will include an intake form, a general health questionnaire, parental consent form, and any other information required to administer care. We will also take your insurance information including driver's license and a copy of your insurance card, for our billing records. Paperwork can be completed online, digitally to help save time.
  • Consultation - This is a basic introductory conversation between you and the doctor during which you will describe your main complaint and discuss the history of the event leading up to our visit together. This conversation will mainly be used to determine whether you are a good candidate for, and if your condition would benefit from, chiropractic care. This is also your time to voice any questions, concerns, or general statements in regards to your condition and the services we offer. You can also view our FAQs about chiropractic for your own reference beforehand, and prepare any questions you might have of your own for your initial visit.

Assessment/Examination

  • Physical Examination - This will include a review of any bodily systems which may be affected by your condition, range of motion screening, orthopedic and neurologic tests, chiropractic exam/palpation, and other diagnostic testing that may be required.
  • Report of Findings - This is where the doctor will explain all of the findings with you, describe to you what your diagnosis is, what the recommended treatment options are available, and what your expected prognosis resulting from chiropractic care will be.
  • Informed Consent / HIPPA - We will inform you of your privacy rights, and of course no treatment will be administed without your educated informed consent.

Treatment

  • Treatment - After all of the above has been completed, your first therapy session will begin. Various treatment options may be applied, such as spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), heat or ice therapy, stretching, Graston technique, cupping therapy, manual soft tissue mobilization techniques (MSTM), and maybe others, depending on your specific individual condition. Our office does NOT use a "cookie-cutter" approach. Each individual patient is different, and therefore each treatment and plan is unique to every patient. You can find a list of the treatment methods our clinic offers in our chiropractic services portion of our website.
  • Professional Recommendations - After your first treatment session is complete, the doctor will give you some extra tips concerning your care. This may include, but is not limited to: home care prescription, work restrictions, home therapies, and further testing.
